Cooroy to Curra, Section C comprises 10.8km of new 4 lane rural motorway with shoulder and provision for future parallel widening. Structurally the project required the detailed design delivery of 13No. bridges. Twelve bridges conveyed the mainline with one bridge serving the local road network. The structural solutions departed from the reference design to provide compliant hydraulic solutions along the new motorway. All but two of the bridges are multi-span structures utilising Super T girders and psc deck units for the beam and slab superstructure arrangements. Substructures are circular columns with the abutments consisting of piled bank seats with spill through embankments. Foundation are piled using both cast in place and precast driven piles. An accelerated programme has been implemented to meet the required design delivery milestones in order to reduce design risk and the cost of the structures a high level of structural repetition was used. Resource sharing with other SMEC offices was ustilised for independent reviews and design verification satisfying both quality control and quality assurance requirements.
The structural options high level of repetivity coupled with the clients technical requirements and expectatations made C2C an ideal project for the implementation of a proof of concept project for the use of generative parametric design, although undertaken post delivery.
